In this brief but rich interview, Mr. Abdulatif Alhammad takes us to the beginning of his childhood in Salmiya and recalls his earliest memories of growing up near the sea. He then talks about his journey to study abroad in Egypt at an early age. He speaks fondly about his time in Victoria College and the lifelong friendships he formed there. He notes that his sense of independence and passion for learning developed while he was abroad. After Victoria College, Alhammad joined the American University of Cairo attempting to study journalism. Soon after he moved to the United States to pursue a degree in International Relations. As he reflects on his days in the US, he tells the story of volunteering for the United Nations. He then speaks about the transition to working with the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development. He also revisits his time as a minister of finance and a minister of planning in the 1980s. Towards the end of the interview, Alhammad focuses on his career at the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development. He explains the pivotal role he played during the invasion and the contributions of the Fund. Alhammad then talks about his retirement and his plans for the future. He ends the interview by nostalgically recalling his school years and what they used to do for entertainment in the 1950s.
في هذه المقابلة القصيرة والغنية، يأخذنا السيد عبداللطيف الحمد إلى بدايات طفولته في منطقة السالمية، ويستدعي أولى ذكرياته حول نشأته قرب البحر. يتحدث الحمد بعد ذلك عن رحلته للدراسة في الخارج، تحديدا في مصر، في سن مبكرة. يتحدث الحمد باعتزاز عن فترة دراسته في كلية فيكتوريا والصداقات المستمرة عبر فترة حياته والتي أقامها هناك. يشير الحمد إلى أن إحساسه بالاستقلالية وشغفه بالمعرفة قد نشآ خلال كونه في الخارج.
بعد كلية فيكتوريا، التحق الحمد بالجامعة الأمريكية في القاهرة في محاولة منه لدراسة الصحافة. بعد ذلك انتقل إلى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية ليحصل على شهادة في العلاقات الدولية. حيث يتأمل الحمد أيامه في الولايات المتحدة، يحكي قصة تطوعه للعمل في الأمم المتحدة. يتحدث الحمد بعد ذلك عن انتقاله للعمل مع الصندوق الكويتي للتنمية الاقتصادية العربية. ويعود الحمد أيضا إلى الفترة التي عمل بها وزيرا للمالية ووزيرا للتخطيط في الثمانينات.
