In this interview, Anisa Mohammad Jafar (famous for Mama Anisa) starts with her earliest childhood memories in Saihad Jibla (in Kuwait City) in the 1930s. she talks about her parents and the support and love they provided her throughout her life. She speaks about their neighborhood, the games they used to play as kids, and the strong bonds between society members from different backgrounds. She stresses on the importance of reading and how it was an essential part of her upbringing. Moving into her formal education, Mama Anisa talks about the first school she attended, describing in detail the building and the school system. She also spends some time speaking about how she excelled in memorizing the Quran, which is something she cherished as a child and continues to until this moment. She further mentions the celebration and prize she received after memorizing the whole Quran. Mama Anisa then moves into speaking about her career in education, and how she started teaching as a teenager. She emphasizes the role traveling to different countries had on her life and career. Advancing into her work in the Ministry of Information, she tells us about how she became to be everyone’s mother, Mama Anisa. The last part of the interview is dedicated to the Iraqi invasion. She describes the hardships her and her family went through as well as her own acts of resistance up until the liberation of Kuwait in 1991.
